If you’ve taken the plunge and ordered an all-electric vehicle (EV) you are probably considering how and where you are going to charge it.
An EV charger installation at your Aylesbury home makes EV car ownership so much simpler. You can simply plug in at the end of the day and your EV car is fully charged and ready to go when you are. Inlight Electrical are your local EV charger installation electrician in Aylesbury. If you’re ready to make the leap to home charging, we’re here to support you.
Where can I install an EV charger?
An EV charger installation requires an off-street parking area, such as a driveway, carport or garage. Whilst charging your EV car with a cable running from your home across a pavement is technically allowed in many areas, it is not advised. This is because of the risk of injury to another person, for which you would be liable. It is not particularly convenient either as you have to remove the cable once charging is complete – not what you want to do after you’ve settled in for the night.
Who can Install an EV Charger?
An EV charger installation at your Aylesbury home should only be carried out by an experienced, registered electrician. Your EV charger will be connected to your home’s electrics at your fuse board. This must be completed by a competent electrician to ensure your home is not put at risk of electrical fire. EV charger installations fall under Part P of the building regulations which stipulate that, for your safety, the work must be completed by a registered electrician and that the work must be properly certificated. You will also find that your EV charger manufacturer requires an Electric Installation Certificate to validate your warranty. These can only be provided by an electrician who is registered with either NAPIT or NICEIC. Inlight Electrical are proudly registered with NAPIT.
Which EV Charger should I choose?
There are lots of different EV chargers on the market for you to choose from. Your EV charger installer will help you to make the right decision based on your needs and budget.
The main decisions you will need to make are:
- How fast do you want your car to charge? The most commonly installed EV chargers are 7kW chargers that take around 6 hours for a full charge. If a longer charging time is suitable for you, then a 3kW charger will charge your EV in roughly 12 hours.
- Tethered or untethered cable? An untethered EV charger can connect to almost any car which is useful for multi-EV households – or if you have visitors. The charger cable is stored in the car itself with this cable style. With a tethered cable charger design the cable remains attached to the EV charger which leaves you with more space in your boot.
- Which design? This is purely a matter of personal taste. Choose a charger design that fits your aesthetic. You can choose from slimline discreet EV chargers to those that light up and make a statement.
- Would you like additional features? EV chargers can have a wide range of additional features, such as solar panel compatibility or smart functionality. Your EV charger installer will talk you through each of these options.
