So why do I need an EV Charger installation at home?

With many years of experience in the electrical field and priding ourselves on our quality workmanship. We make sure our customers receive the best advice and detailed explanations before we conduct any electrical services such as installing an EV charger at home. Here are some useful discussion points you might want to consider before getting in touch with us:

Where can I have an EV Charger Installed?

This is a key question we get asked all the time, Inlight Electrical requires you to have off road parking such as a private garage or a driveway, this is the most convenient place to keep your vehicle while it is charging. We can only install an EV Charger at a property with the permission from the homeowner. If you’re a tenant and are thinking of getting an EV Charger installed, we will need written permission by the landlord prior to installation.

Can I plug my electric car into a regular three pin socket?

Inlight Electrical advises our customers against charging your electric vehicle into a standard three pin wall socket. This can take up to 30 hours depending on the size of the electric vehicle's battery.

For the most part, charging your vehicle using a three pin socket can be incredibly dangerous due to excess cables and wires causing trip hazards. Most importantly, potential fires could be a result of charging your vehicle using a three pin socket due to the increase in current required when charging your electric vehicle.

Does a home EV Charger Installation make charging quicker?

Most residential homes will use a 7kW charger which is what Inlight Electrical recommends. An average battery size for electric vehicles tends to be around 60kWh, using a 7kW charger should take you around 8 hours.

What about wifi?

There are some excellent up to date smart features on many of the modern EV chargers. Many smart chargers can actually be controlled remotely via a charging app on your smartphone so that you can start and stop charging your vehicle remotely. We suggest you have a good WiFi connection so that the EV Charger we install at your Aylesbury home is within range of the router.

How do I connect my electric vehicle to the charger?

From 2014, the majority of electric vehicles or plug-in vehicles use a type 2 connector or plug as this was regulated by the EU. Chances are, you probably need a type 2 connector but this is something our team of experts can look into for you.

Which is better, a tethered or untethered charger?

An untethered charger will not include the charging cable, this could be more of a hassle and inconvenient for you as you would have to retrieve a charging cable every time you want to charge your vehicle. As you would have had to purchase a charging cable separately while opting for an untethered charger, you would then have the benefit of taking your charging cable with you when you’re on the go.

A tethered charger has a permanent attached charging cable similar to a traditional petrol or diesel pump. It is unlikely to be stolen, lost or misplaced which means your charger will be ready to use immediately.
