With Christmas just around the corner, Inlight Electrical, Aylesbury are here to remind you to be mindful and responsible over the festive period.
Christmas is an exciting time for all, kids running around, the food, seeing friends and family, lots of chocolate and of course the gifts! In the midst of all the excitement electrical safety can drop down in our mental list of priorities. At Inlight Electrical, Aylesbury we want all of our customers to have the best Christmas possible, but we also want you and your loved ones to stay safe, all you need to do is follow these simple steps…
Use Christmas lights safely
Please make sure you are lighting up your home safely. Using indoor LED lights inside and outdoor, weatherproof lights outside. Outdoor lights must have a minimum IP44 rating, even better if it’s IP65. Put simply, IP ratings indicate the level of protection of electrical equipment against elements like water. The higher the number the better protection.
Turn off the lights!
When leaving the house or heading to bed, make sure you turn off your Christmas lights…and blow out any candles. When Christmas lights are left on for an extended period of time, they are much less likely to overheat. To reduce the risk of a fire, turn those lights off!
Christmas tree care
Have you opted for a real Christmas tree this year? Real trees can catch fire more easily than artificial trees – to avoid overheating indoor LEDs should ONLY be used. Leading on from this, real Christmas trees should be watered frequently to avoid them becoming too dry. It’s also a smart idea to position your Christmas tree away from any heat source like a radiator or fireplace.
Extension lead safety
Extensions should be used responsibly at all times, even at Christmas. Overloading extension leads is extremely dangerous, they can easily overheat increasing the risk of fire. Before using your extension lead you should visually inspect the wiring and sockets for damage and discoloration. If in use, you can smell burning, please unplug the lead and discard of the equipment safely. Extension leads are also a huge trip hazard. When in use, make sure the lead is safely tucked away to avoid any unwanted incidents…the last thing anyone wants is a trip to A&E over Christmas. Remember to never run them beneath rugs and use cord protectors if possible.
Christmas dinner
Everyone’s favourite part! Christmas dinner is arguably the best part about Christmas. With lots of preparation and cooking, safety can easily be forgotten. Be sure to test your fire alarms before the big day just in case! Having some spare batteries is also a good idea. When cooking, make sure any flammable equipment such as tea towels are kept away from the hob area.
