What happens during a rewire?

During a full rewire, all the electrical cables in your home are replaced with new. The fuse box or consumer unit is replaced with the most up to date consumer unit and the whole wiring installation is carried out in accordance with the building regulations and with the safety wiring regulations.

There are various ways in which a house can be rewired but generally the process is as follows:

Walls are chased

The walls have channels cut into them to enable cables to be installed and later plastered over. Machinery is often used to cut the channels neatly and where possible a dust extraction machine is used to prevent excessive construction dust from causing hazards.

Floorboards are lifted

Where cables run to various sockets and lights throughout the property, cable routes are considered beforehand by the electricians and relevant flooring is lifted in order to safely install the cabling and hide any cables where possible.

Cables are installed

The cables are run throughout the property, secured in the floors and to the channels in the wall. Electrical testing is carried out throughout the installation to ensure that the cables are not damaged and safe to use.

Not only are the electrical cables installed but the safety earthing connections to any pipework will be installed at this time and the appropriate clamps and labels fitted.

Back boxes are installed

Where electrical accessories are to be installed in the walls, the right type of electrical boxes are channeled into the masonry or cut into the plasterboard to allow the sockets and switches to sit back against the wall and to contain the cables safely.

Wiring is first fixed

Once all cables have been run in and boxes chased the ‘first fix’ has been carried out.

Wiring is second fixed

The consumer unit is installed, the sockets, switches, lights, and other electrical accessories are installed and screwed back.

Testing, Inspection and Certification

Final testing is carried out to ensure that the trip switch devices are working as intended and electric shock protection is in place and operational. The sockets switches and lights are tested to ensure that good readings are obtained. When the installation is deemed safe to re-energise functional testing is carried out to ensure that light switches, sockets, and light fittings are working correctly.

How much does a rewire cost?

The cost of a rewire depends upon the amount of electrical accessories that need to be installed, the difficulty of on-site conditions and the length of cable runs. For a guide, we have a rewire cost calculator on our website that you could use to get an estimate. To firm up the estimate into a quote we may need to visit to check a few things out.
